2021 is around the corner – is your business ready?
Planning for a new year in business is exciting. It’s when you get to dream big dreams and continue to create the business you want.
But a bunch of exciting ideas on a piece of paper is no good without a plan to implement it.
A good way to start goal planning is to reflect on the current year.
I like to set up a strategy session with my team where we discuss how the year has gone.
Some of our discussion points are:
- What did we do well this year?
- What could we improve on for next year?
- What goals were accomplished?
- What goals weren’t accomplished? Why? Should they be moved to next year?
Having their opinions especially about their particular area of focus in your business is so helpful and they are most likely seeing things you don’t or have a different perspective then you do.
If you don’t have a team, discuss with a valued colleague or small business owner in a similar industry to get a different point of view.
Once you have reflected about the current year, it’s time to plan for the upcoming year!
What are you going to focus on in the new year?
Some ideas could be:
- Establishing procedures and processes
- Scaling and adding new team members
- Developing a new product or program
I also evaluate the services I offer to make sure I will be offering them for the next year.
Also consider if there are new services you want to offer your clients. This is a great time to reflect on your offerings and evaluate to keep or omit.
You also should check your contracts to make sure no adjustments need to be made for your retainer clients. If any adjustments need to be made, make sure to let you clients know with enough time for them to plan.
Now it’s time to select your goals.
I like to pick 3 goals to focus on so I am not trying to do everything.
For each goal make a plan. Develop your plan by outlining how you will accomplish your goal. Set timelines and deadlines for implementation. Put benchmarks on your calendar to check in on how your goals are going throughout the year. This is a great way to make sure you are on track to accomplish what you set out to do.
