When we think of marketing, it’s easy to picture flashy ads or catchy slogans, but there’s a whole world of strategy and creativity behind it. Marketing isn’t just about selling stuff—it’s about understanding what makes people tick, finding out what they need (sometimes even before they know it!), and then making sure your product or service is the answer they’ve been searching for all along.
There are many components to marketing your business that create one powerful toolkit to fuel your growth but here are just a few:
Ultimately, it’s about more than just promotion; it’s about understanding customer needs and desires, and then crafting strategies to meet those needs effectively.
So before jumping straight into branding or advertising, we have to know who the product or service is for.
Knowing your target market is one of the most important elements in marketing for small business owners.
Do you know your target audience?
Depending on your business there are different ways to define them. And if you don’t, how do you go about finding them? First, we must figure out their interests, their needs, and where they hang out.
For example my target audience for done-for-you services is a female, established coach or creative, been in business 5-10 years, usually between 40-60 years old, ready to scale and outsource with the help of a team.
Once you’ve got a handle on who they are, you can tailor your messaging and strategies to speak directly to them. You can also anticipate their behaviors before diving into marketing and all the strategies.
Something I see all the time is potential clients doing all the sparkly new marketing strategies without realizing that their target audience won’t be there. Do the market research because here’s the thing: what works for one business may not be the best for another.
A good place to start strategizing is to take a good look at your goals, your strengths, and what your customers respond to best. Maybe your audience loves engaging with you on Instagram, or maybe they prefer good old-fashioned emails. By focusing on what actually resonates with your audience, you can craft strategies that are not only effective but also sustainable in the long run.
Instead of chasing every trend that comes along, you need a marketing strategy that’s as unique as your business and keeps you ahead of the game and on the path to success.
